Dear Mr. President: Your "Benefit of the Doubt" Pass is Wearing Thin.
I was expecting President Obama to move towards the center for the upcoming elections, but this is not what I had in mind. I am going to be sick to my stomach...As Obama Moves slowly to the Right..I am slowly moving away from Obama.
(I cannot believe this is happening!) 1. Nuclear Power Plants
2. Offshore Oil Drilling
3. Hunting and Killing of Whales
4. Net Neutrality abandoned by Obama FCC 5. The above are the definite things I am pissed about. (I am still being patient and cautiously optimistic about the two wars, the bank and auto bail-outs and his "don't ask-don't tell" (or whatever it is) military policy.

I think not building new nuclear power plants has done harm to the environment, the oil and coal has and is doing more damage. Build some and not drill offshore (and leave the whales alone).

I wonder if the Britts will still push for ecocide as a punishable crime since the BP oil spill in the gulf? No worries though the ceo of BP said they were going to pay for the clean up so that makes things ok. also the timing of Obama's announcement of more off shore drilling doesnt look so good now drill baby drill! wait he didnt say that Sarah did. The whale hunting is terrible dozens of people in camridge dont know what to do with their "save the whale" bumper stickers, since supporting Obama means supporting whale hunting.I thought Sarah Palin was the only hunter on the ticket in "08" but I guess we were wtong about that? This guy is moving further and further to the right. you liberal democrats might have been better off with john mccain as president?? As a right wing nut job/ditto head this is all very amusing except for the whale hunting thats just plain murder. It has surely been a tough week for the chosen one, although it couldve been much, much worse for Mr Obama, for if he were a republican every news outlet in the country would be screaming about the cute democrat camaign worker named Vera Baker and her alleged overnight stay at the George hotel in D.C. in 2004 with then candidate for senate Barrack Obama as i said its all alleged, that is until the video that the security camera's shot comes out, then it might make a few headlines and we can drop the word alleged from the story line? all this juicy stuff and its not even november yet. I cant help but wonder if all the people that voted for Barrack Obama feel they are getting the goods as advertised? Im guessing alot of people who left the clinton camp in favor of Obama regret it. So far I think the only people who saw him for what he is turning out to be are republicans, to us he is living up to our expectations and as we've seen this week he is exceeding them, leaving little doubt he is a one term president but we were labeled as racist, I wonder if you liberals will be labled racists when you start to criticize him for doing things that you dont like? maybe your just criticizing him because he's black?

The first and best thing to do regarding energy is to use less, and everybody has to embrace that policy, not just a president. However, that has proven for over thirty years to be akin to telling a country that smokes to quit. Energy consumption is like tobacco, and the threat of cancer i.e. collapse of the country in a big way, exists as long as we continue to make token efforts to wean ourselves. I absolutely believe that Obama, or Hillary Clinton or any other Democrat is degrees of magnitude more in tune with fixing that than Bush, Reagan, Palin, McCain -the list goes on- could ever possibly be.
On points one and two, there were no overt denials of those possibilities, and in fact Obama portrayed himself as open to expanded nuclear and domestic oil programs during 2007 prior to the primaries. Especially regarding nuclear, there are several videos of the 2007-8 era in which Obama declares general support for plant building. His home state of Illinois has more nuclear plants than any other state, and he did not campaign on any disapproval of nuclear energy, just a call for less cronyism at NRC and increased safety.
So those two points are not really things I think he has reneged on. I think that they were part of his willingness to compromise and that we really shouldn't take his recent actions as drastic changes in direction.
The other two points, whales and net neutrality, are however easily avoidable wrong headed stances that I never thought would be a problem. Those are indeed troubling shifts, and I agree that supporters should sound off loudly that we disagree with anything less than what we thought we voted for there.

No comments about a smokin' SUV mid-day in Times Square? Excuuuuzzzz me?

And the "smoking SUV" has WHAT to do with the price of tomatoes?

I have to agree with you Charles.I have become more and more disenchanted with Obama .Drone missles killing thousands of innocent people, the off shore drilling ,that he still wants to do,not putting Bush & friends in jail.still kissing repubs' ass ...the list just keeps on growing !!

I am a life-long Democrat who voted for Obama because he was the Democratic candidate. I knew he didn't represent most of my interests.
I have been giving the Dems a pass for 16 years, and they are just part of the problematic one-party system in this country.
Now it may be time to withdraw from the party.
Thinking Americans need to start forming alternative political parties.

I don't understand why everyone is sooo surprised.Obama is a polititian he does almost anytihng to please everyone. He wants 4 more after these 4 are done so he'll please as many as possible. He'll make exscuses so he's on everyone's best list.He really wants to be on those arcs from 2012!

I agree with Steve and Bill. Obama did talk about nuclear energy and off shore drilling during his campaign. And as a politician he will say or do anything to get enough votes to get (re)elected.
Unlike you Charles I do not see any of this as a move to the right. If it is it's not far enough for me. As far as killing whales thats not a left or right issue - it's just plain stupid.
On a side note I understand that the fail safe valve installed on the Deepwater Horizon was designed and built by Halliburton. I am amazed this administration has not yet blamed Cheney for the whole mess.
P.S. Charles - tomatoes are at $1.99 a pound at my local supermarket.

Can we add his back down on recognizing the Armenian Genocide!!!
Posted by: Jenn | May 5, 2010 6:16 AM
In normal times Obama would be considered a centrist Republican. But considering the alternatives, I'll stick with him. A majority of Americans think the Arizona immigration law is fine. That's scary.
We had McCain, Pataki and other "moderate" Republicans complain about this terror suspect being read his Miranda right...
HE'S A FUCKING AMERICAN. WE DON'T PICK AND CHOOSE TO WHICH AMERICANS WE CONFER RIGHTS....and these jerkoffs know that, but insist upon pandering to the knuckle draggers anyway..
so Obama may be just a piece of styrofoam in the middle of the ocean, but I'd rather hang on to that than drown....

OH and as for 'backing down' on Armenian Genocide.......what's theupside for America to piss off Turkey right now? There is none. The Armenian Americans should look at the big picture right now and see that....

Obama = Bush = Clinton
It is about time that you are figuring out that they are all on the same team.
Just look what Obama did to cia bagman Noriega:

Protection for past drug crimes involving Poppy Bush and partner Gov. Bill Clinton who flooded our country with cocaine and crack!
Wake up!!
Political racism (new term by me!)should stop.
Lets agree that we need some accountability from our central government and that a strong local government works best!
BTW
How about those troop reductions in Iraq????????????????????

I feel the same way Charles. I'd add to your list that they renewed the Patriot Acts this past February and have done nothing to repeal the tax breaks that help continue to off-shore our jobs. I'm fed up. I will not vote Republican (or the wackos in the Tea Party) as that will just put the asshats that really made a mess of things prior to Obama back in power. I'm voting as independent as I can from now on.

No MF, he's not a F'ing American. He became a Naturalized Citizen last year when he paid a woman to marry him so he could get a Green Card. This is not uncommon and very dangerous for this country.
Posted by: Sheila Reynolds | May 5, 2010 6:59 PM
Shelia, my understanding of the law is that a person who marries a U.S. citizen can apply for permanent resident status, i.e. a "green card". If that status is granted, the person must then live in the U.S. for at least three years, and then take the same examination as anyone else who wants to become a naturalized citizen. Without the marriage, the period between "green card" and naturalization is five years, not three. In either event, a naturalized citizen is a citizen, thus an American just as any of us born here are. The suspect followed the legal path and three year time restrictions - as a result, he is an American by definition and can enjoy the same protections as those born here.

Isn't there talk about stripping American citizens of citizenship if they are convicted of terrorism against the USA?
I'm pretty sure that I heard this on the television this past week. Now, I'm curious if this refers to naturalized citizens or it's a flashback to "Man Without a Country"?
