N.Y. Times: STFU!!

Is this news organization (that I normally respect and read regularly) doing something dumb- and possibly bordering on treason? Unless it was going to be released by other sources, I believe that this story should have been buried. We are in a time of war against terrorists. I could be wrong, and would like to hear from knowledgeable people about this (not from the Wingnuts who have always hated the Times and call it “left-wing liberal biased reporting”)*. The release of this story perplexes me. What's your take, people?
*(I will delete any dumb-ass “I told you so” comments from the Right. I need information- not blabber.)

Furlong (the mastermind) is the one for whom treason should be mentioned. We're not at war with Afghanistan and Pakistan, and in trying to partner with their repective legal government representatives to defeat terrorists in the region, efforts are undermined by such independent, illegal, rogue "vigilante" efforts by an attention seeking Defense Department egomaniac.

I've no problem with the story being released.

Charles, this kind of reporting is critical to maintaining democracy. The NYT is reporting that this was a rogue spying operation reporting to no senior authority, run by a member of the DOD (the armed forces don't spy, that's what the CIA is for), and possibly was paid for with funds allocated for other purposes (also what the CIA is for...) I have no issue with spies id'ing targets for the military in Pakistan and Afganistan, but as GSP said, in addition to being illegal, this also harms our efforts to work with their governments to fight terrorists in their countries.

It might not feel that way, but you WANT the press to publish these things.
