Titanic Tuesday

I was mentioning to my son how this MA election is arguably the most important election in MA history. His response was, “Why? It's just one seat...!” It was then that I realized that it's all over but the Fat Lady singing..
I don't want to sound dramatic here, but if we lose this deal-breaking seat to an ultra-conservative Republican at this crucial time, then it's all over for Obama, for the Democratic party, and for the millions of Americans who voted for him last November.
It's not local- it's national
. It's a huge referendum on what direction this country is going to be going in for the next decade. Losing this seat will literally unravel all things Obama and all things Centrist and Left.
For liberals and moderates to ignore and/or insult those of us (who don't particularly like Coakley, but understand and see clearly what the alternative is going to be), they are either being ignorant, or have tunnel-vision- or are just plain malicious and insensitive.
I have no quarrel with either normal Conservatives or the Extreme Right, here. They have their beliefs and their principles, and they are only doing what they should be doing during election time. My problem is reading and listening to moderates and liberals who don't see the incredible significance of this election! The importance of tomorrow's vote is not lost on the Right- believe me. They are pulling out all the stops for this one!
Someone referred to me and others as "Uber-liberals"... Uber-liberals indeed! If Brown wins, you who chose to go after Martha Coakley will be making a really dumb choice. Coakley blew it big-time and is far from being the perfect candidate. (She ran one of the worst campaigns in history, and I won't say here what I think of her personally). But this is not about “putting Coakley in her place”. It's about making the huge mistake of ignoring and down-playing the alternative. You can vote for what you believe, but you should also understand that if you don't vote- or if you are in any way responsible for Scott Brown becoming the next Senator for Massachusetts- you will get what you deserve; and even those of us who may be thousands of miles away will pay dearly for this. Not a threat- a fact.

I will leave all comments on my blog, but I want to control the dialogue when it appears on Fb so it isn't just more of the same insults and bla bla bla. Those who want to bla bla bla can do so on my blog- http://bigmattress.com/weblog/ or they can do it all over the other Fb pages that are talking about this today and tomorrow. I want to try to get a discussion going from a less hysterical perspective and your posted comments may be deleted if I don't feel they address the points I am making here in an academic and non-emotional manner.

Charles, at this point both candidates have become so annoying that it's really difficult to vote for either one of them. We've had multiple (and I mean, many multiple) phone messages on our answering machine for days now. These people and their supporters obviously have no respect for privacy, why can't they program their phone bots to call each number only once? That and I can't go anywhere on the web without having Scott Brown's smirk staring back at me. I'm sure the frenzy will probably generate a decent voter turnout, but I'm also afraid that some of the core pivotal voters will stay away due to general political disillusion and hopelessness, especially since our "Change you can believe in" hasn't materialized. Same old, same old, same old. I'm moving back to Portugal, Costa Rica or Hawaii when I retire, I tell ya.

Party leaders in Mass. made a critical error here thinking that any Dem. who could fog a mirror would win Teddy's seat. Picking a candidate who doesn't seem to stand for anything and has no charisma isn't going to cut it now. The sad thing will be the fact that those who have supported Teddy over the years may not equate the election of a Republican with the defeat of what Kennedy spent decades fighting for in the Senate. So close and yet they may throw his legacy out with the bathwater. Too bad.

I was at the gym for 45 minutes this morning....I saw exactly 18 Brown and Coakley TV spots. Every freakin' one of them was a negative ad --- EVERY ONE.
I think they both suck.

If Martha took Scoot seriously from the beginning we wouldn't be in this quagmire.

I'll vote for Martha but am getting worn down by elections being played out as :30 negative spots. There's enough guilt here to spread around.

LOL! to think that we could have a republican Senator from the state of Massachusetts is un imaginable! all she had to do sit on her 30 point lead and she couldnt do that. if she loses this will be the biggest political blunder in the history of Massachusetts politics! But even if Brown wins coakley's office is going to delay his swearing in until after the revised healthcare bill makes it out of committee nullifying his no vote anyway. The governor and the state legislature have been stacking the deck in the Dem's favor since before big Teddy passed and they still might lose the seat! I realize the vote isnt until tomorrow but the fact that this is even a race is a major victory for those of us who are not the kool aid drinking moon bats of cambridge! GO SCOTT GO! and look our Deval! you are next!!

No one cares about Deval, MM.
Coakley blew it by defending the rights of the Christmas underwear bomber during the debate. Saying that if we protect his rights, our soldiers will be treated well is so.... the Wrong Answer. Stupid woman. She did herself in with that one.

Hold you nose and vote for Martha....it is THAT important !!! The price we will pay is too large...Charles is right...Scott Brown would never have made it in any other atmosphere...or against any other candidate...He is a recipient of misplaced anger..He IS an empty suit..

coakley ran an awful campaign

brown ran a good camaign

kennedy had no money and was an ignored third party candidate

forecast is light snow which is bad for coakley as the old democrats and welfare peeps will stay home and the brown supporters would come through a hurricane to vote

looks like a brown cruise and more war

This is why Democrat elitism wins elections for Republicans every time. It's the people's seat stupid. Charles will you and your friends ever learn your lesson? This is what happens when you take people for granted. Are the Democrats that arrogant to ignore the polls on this health care? The reckless spending and the finger pointing and blaming. Scott Brown ran a positive campaign. Marsha ran against Bush...Wow time for a new playbook. Looks like she acted stupid not the Cambridge police department. Massachusettes already has healthcare. Why should we pay for Nebraska's sweet deal? People are tired of the backroom deals and the partisan politics. This is not hope and change. It's buyers remorse. Yes even here we have it. This will send a clear message to Washington that we don't like to be told to shut up and take what they are forcing down our throat. When 60 % of the people do not want this health care, big spending, buying of votes and terrorist show trials. Democrats need to respect this and go back to the drawing board. This is not about Marsha as much as it is about Obama, Pelosi and Reid. That's ok Democrats. Continue to ignore the people and listen to your SEIU, FARMA and other lobbyist and go down big time. Change is coming to Massachusetts TODAY!!

If Scott would not have made it in any other environment as is stated above, neither would Obama. You voted against what we had, you did not vote FOR Obama. Watch this video, the final health care bill. Is this what you want? Time to stop the insanity. My vote goes to Scott.

I ditto Tony B's comments. The invasion of privacy on behalf of both candidates calling our homes was epic. That type of campaigning needs to be outlawed. And now the right-to-lifers and anti-gay marriage idiots are calling. Good goddam grief.

First of quit crying about all the phone calls for a couple of days. Try living in NH they start about 3 months before the Presidential primaries and progressively get worse.
Second we Democrats put ourselves in this position ourselves once again. The DNC "annoited" Coakley long before the primary. She was no less a piece of shit of a human being 2 months ago. Martha has been about nothing but Martha for years. Where were all the negative stories then. The other candidates feared to even mention her name let alone attack her at the debate. The DNC expects we should accept anything they shove down our throats and like it, much like this health care bill that they have been cramming hard to get voted on long before this election occurred. But guess what it wasn't the republicans that were holding it up, it was fellow dems lining up to include their pet pork projects before they would vote. As some previously said, Is this what you really wanted? Just hold your nose and swallow because something is better than nothing? Let's reward gigantic douchebag for 1 vote of something we sorta want? I am not saying it is right or wrong, I am just being the gadfly here. This is what it has come to and dems have to blame ourselves for the whole disaster.

Aye Robbie, 'change is coming to Massachusetts today'. Gee, change...where have we heard that before? This former male model will apparently do nothing more than provide the GOP with the extra vote they need to derail the closest thing to health care reform we've had in 40 years. I'm so glad you smug baystaters are covered and don't give a shit about anyone else. Wait where have I heard that one before...oh yeah all the right wingnuts. I get a kick out of the Dem/Rep. bickering. Like two kids in the back seat. The real sad truth is that we are a two party system, which is the lowest level upon which a democracy can be based.

The Kennedy's should have pushed Joe to run for the 2 1/2 years left on Teddy's term, if they wanted to secure his legacy and the Health Care Bill.
Yeah, I know that Joe wasn't interested, but he could have sucked it up for the remainder and gone with Teddy's agenda, then the Democrats could have really vetted a viable, likable candidate and put together a strong campaign.
After that, Joe could have gone back to his oil business. If he had run, it would have been a slam-dunk.

hey Peter your comments fit another come from behind election winner where timing was everything. the other empty suit name barrack hussein obama
