As a professional musician, I have to say that learning to play merely by ear without learning to read music is a terrible mistake and a handicap as a player. This site brags about not having to learn to read as if this were some major bonus; it's not.

Hey, Susan - When you say you are a professional musician, does that mean you get paid to play music, or get paid to teach people to read music?
I am also a professional musician (for the last 30 years) and started out by learning to read music, but it wasn't until I stopped looking and started listening that I was able to improvise, in real time. I don't read music now and have no need to. Unless you're playing classical music, reading notes is a detriment to playing music! Most readers I know can't play if you take their music away...
