Les moralistes are out in full force. And when Manny starts winning ballgames again, it'll be, "What a comeback!" When the Celtics were losing in '08, it was "Doc Rivers is a moron" -- when they won, he suddenly morphed into a genius. Journalistes have to meet deadlines, and the easiest way to do that is praise those who are up and dump on those who are down. "He didn't visit Walter Reed" -- gimme a break.
Please! To suggest that Manny is somehow the victim of "Les moralistes" and not of his own arrogance and childishness is ludicrous. No one is suggesting that Manny was not or is not a truly gifted hitter, only that he has finally had his kharma kickback. We like to teach children that their actions have consequences. Unfortunately, Manny never learned this lesson, and for far too long was enabled by his employers. Still, I will concede that his use of testing positive troubled me less than his actively quitting on the Red Sox last year. One has to look pretty far and wide to find anything close in comparison to that selfish and petulant act.
... or that he played to lose, that was the real kick in the head.
Hey, sports today are not the same game as the sports of yesteryear and, let's face it, it's NEVER gonna go back to that, so, until we figure out the new point of reference, this is just an exercise in futility.
