If you want to hear some of Mitchell's best work, I suggest listening to the Voodoo Child Jam from side on on Electric Ladyland. Just Jimi, Mitch, Jack Casady, and Steve Winwood. Live in the studio-no overdubs. And turn it up LOUD.
Sadly, on the Experience Hendrix road show he was more of a prop. A friend who saw it in S.F. said he had sticks in his hand but wasn't really capable of playing and that it was a bit painful to watch. Perhaps a harbinger of something that was obviously wrong and precipitated his demise.
ZJ,
I know form personal experience he was a terminal Heron Addict. I met him at Electric Lady Studio in NYC circa 1975. He was a small man had the stature of a jockey. I'm surprised he lived as long as he did. I always considered his drumming very flighty. Buddy Miles was the better of Hendrix's drummers by far.
