Umm, we did genius! They really need to update the history books. A lot of stuff has happened since the Civil War that adults today have no idea about.
To clarify (and head off another confused "What the Hell are you talking about" email): I was referring to the person who wrote the sign as the Genius not you, Charles. We all know you were there screaming go Jessie go.
I'm still trying to decide if all this razzamatazz re: China, you know, the protests to stop the torch et al isn't a bit like "A lot of hot air that doesn't accomplish anything". I mean, it's already been long decided that China was hosting, a world leader purposely missing the Opening Event, aside from totally offending China, think that's going to actually alter China's ways of doing anything? Does China need us as much as we need China at this point? If we really did our homework about the Chinese sensibility, isn't there a more effective, less publicly embarrassing way to accomplish, quietly and more diplomatically "socially correct" way to move China along OUR way of doing things? When are we going to be less politically clumsy? We're clumsy in dealing with the Middle East, we're clumsy in dealing with the Far East, when are we going to be more sensitive to handling foreign policy in a way that is successful and yet attuned to being culturally sensitive?
Why do we always seem to be show-boating our ways on other cultures?
But according to this CNN piece, China decided to boycott the Olympics over the Olympic Committee's decision to recognize Taiwan in 1956 and didn't participate again until 1984. It could be that boycotts are something they understand.
"It frightens me to be in agreement with President George W. Bush on anything, but I have to agree with him that any boycott of the opening ceremony on Aug. 8 would be counterproductive, a slap in the face - and for what? Better the president and other world leaders should belatedly learn how to conduct diplomacy and draw attention to Beijing's poor record in human rights without using an overblown sports jamboree to cover up for their failures."
Not that it really matters because the debate is about China's behavior, not the intelligence of protesters...but the lettering on the sign looks faked (modified by photoshop) to say something stupid/funny.

That being said, hopefully diplomacy will win out:
