Subject: Schiavo case
To the editor of the Wall Street Journal:
I understand why so-called "conservatives" are getting involved in the Schiavo case, even though it is big government getting involved in the most intimate of family decisions and even though it is clearly a states right's issue being trampled upon by the federal government: right wing GOPers have seen the brain scan showing nothing doing between that poor woman's ears, and they can relate.

You know what. Forget the Democrats, Republican thing for a moment. Why does this guy, who now lives with another woman and has two kids with her, want this woman dead? Divorce her. I think the parents offered him One Million Dollars to walk away. Is it the insurance money that he wants? What's the deal? He's moved on; her parents love her and said that she responds to them. She is not brain dead; she has limited mental ability. BUT she is not brain dead by medico/legal terms. Her family loves her; they want her to live. Did you hear about that person who just came out of a vegetative coma after 25-30 years and started conversing?
What I want to know (and a good friend of mine put this forth in conversation) is WHY this guy is fighting so hard to kill her. Maybe she didn't drop from a heart attack. Maybe he did something to her and he's worried she'll come to and spill the goods???
A lot of medical advances have been made in these 15 or so years that she's been like this, and the limits of the state/judicial system (as we have seen in Florida) are blatant in this case. Take the tube out/ no put the tube in/ take the tube out/ no put the tube in. I have no problem siding with the Republicans on this issue. Is it frivolous? What isn't frivolous when it comes to these quicky passionate issues that the Congress takes up. Personally, I don't give a rat's ass if ball players take steroids. Okay, that's my shtick, you may feel differently. So, the parents, desperate to go as far as they can, did what I would have done as a parent in the same situation.
Hey, Good luck to them and Barney (as in Frank), I can't agree with you on this one, but you're still a good guy.

I am really torn on this Terri Schiavo case. The fact that they have to give her pain killers while they starve her to death speaks volumes. Brain dead people do not feel pain. I worked in a rehabilitation hospital for five years and saw patients who were in worse shape than Terri. They were kept in beds called veil beds. They get zipped in and cannot not get out. They look like cribs. I saw one patient in particular go from this type of bed to being able to drive and work again. From what I understand, Terri did not get rehabilitative care that could have helped her. I understand not wanting someone to "live" like this but starving her to death troubles me. Sometimes, an infection can not be treated and it would be less cruel to have the person die from it. I worked at a hospital and there was a cancer patient who not matter how much she ate, could not gain weight. She wasted away to nothing and I could put my two fingers around her ankle and have them meet. I just can't imagine the pain she felt at wasting away like that. Starving someone is cruel. In rehab, they can train parts of the brain to relearn what they used to do. Alot depends on the diagnosis and I don't have that but why do they have to starve her to death? It just seems cruel and I couldn't bear to watch that.

Both parties are guilty of politicizing this case. It seems to me that no liberals had a problem with the Massachusetts state supreme court ordering the legislature to pass a law making okay for homosexuals to marry eachother.
This woman is not brain dead! she is in a vegataed state! I want to belive that her husband's motives are pure, but if her parents want to keep her alive he should respect their wishes and move on with his life, she should not die just so her husband can have closure!
I have one question. Do all you people on this blog think that congress was wrong in their decision to move this case to federal court? If so what is the reason why? Is this 100% political or is their a chance that some members of congress actualy believe she should have the right to live?

memory man Look at the media for answers or should I say non answers. If the media kept away from such topics as they used to, we wouldn't even hear about such things. They are either looking for ratings or they have a hidden agenda. I believe it is a hidden agenda, fueled by the political views of the parent corporations. Are they reporting the news or creating it to sway public opinion?

As a Floridian, I see this as 101% political. The sight of shiny-shoed Congressmen crawling over each other to curry favor with Rove et al is the smarmiest thing to come from this ever more smarmy body. The devilishly pointed cynicism of the Rove faction has turned this into yet another case of the Constitution being nibbled to death by ducks. This case is very sad for many reasons: Terri being first. Elevating this case to something Bush would leave Texas for, in order to "be there to sign it into law as soon as it is passed" simply doesn't come close to passing the 'smell test.'
And this affront to the Constitution will be felt for years to come.

Memory Man,
I think the members of Congress are a microcosm of American society itself, so my answer to you is for some it's political, but ...yes, there are those in Congress who took on this issue because they actually believe that she should have the right to live.

Dear Memory Man,
Congressmen having a political agenda? Now THERE'S a shock!
Where's the smelling salts?

s this an issue of priorities? Yes. Many families face these life and death issues every day. No parent wants their child to die. No spouse wants their partner to suffer. This is where we incorporate the 'Living will'. Do you have one?
I think the money spent to convene Congress on the weekend and send Air force1 half way across the country to bring the President in to vote on Sunday on this issue of a 15 year old vegetative hospital patient 's future is the abomination of waste. Who pays for her continual care? Health insurance? Who can afford This? Our tax payer's money could have been better spent on properly equipping our able-bodied brave young soldiers who are being maimed and killed in 'defense' of our country stationed around the world. So many dying every day! This is a lame smoke screen! Made all political by the current administration. They don't value real human life! Just a potential vote in the next election!

Hey Lady Artist,
I like your post. But if Terri Schiavo needs the care, I think she should get it. I called the Governor of Massachusetts the other day because silly me, I thought the the whole idea of having state assisted programs was to GET OFF of them. I was supposed to go into the hospital to be observed to find out where my seizures happen and fix it so I could get back to work. Mass Health would not allow it. So, I have to do a hit or miss solution to find out how best to treat them. I want to go back to work! I don't think eating bonbons and watching soap operas is for me. I have a few goals. They are:
1) to spell the way I used to
2) Design my stamps and market them to major craft companies.
3) See U2 in concert.
But because Mass Health is being penny wise and pound foolish, I will have to be on the system longer. Go figure. And your tax dollars pay for stupid decisions like this. Sorry.
