Aloha, Cyber-radio
I'm doing an internet radio show beginning this coming Wednesday March 23, at 6:00 AM Hawai'i time (11:00 AM Eastern) on KEAO-LP 91.5 fm in Maui. So far, I am scheduled only on Wednesday mornings (cool shift, huh?)
Because it is low power, it cannot be heard everywhere in Hawai'i, but the signal reaches central parts of Maui: Kahului, Makawao, Pukalani and many other areas of the island.
You reading this can hear it loud and clear at http://www.manaoradio.com. The listening instructions are geared to Bill Gates' PCs (of course) but Mac owners can easily get it using iTunes.
note: This is radio the way it used to be. I am not shitting you when I say, "the way it used to be," because this type of free-form radio is a thing of the past, and can only be described as somewhat like college radio, but not. I mean, most college stations have some kind of format and some semblance of rhyme and reason- not this baby- this is total (I mean total ) free-form. To those of you too young to remember what free-form radio is like, I will say this:
If you don't recognize the song you are listening to, give it a closer listen because you will probably never hear it on commercial corporate radio- and besides- even if you don't like it, you will love the next song. (or not!)
It is at times exciting (and sometimes boring) and oftentimes thought-provoking (and many times downright painful) and- just because it is what it is- it is refreshingly wonderful!
Also, please understand that the more internet listeners that tune in, the wider the bandwidth the station has to deal with, and the more expensive it becomes to operate. Since there are no commercials, this can be problematic if lots of people listen without making a contribution once in a while.

so what time is it in new york if it's 6am in maui... i know i should know this.... and will they archive your show so i can listen any time?
Posted by: Elsie | March 19, 2005 12:45 PM
The east coast is 6 hours ahead during DST. Hawai'i doesn't change clocks ever.
Archive? Again, this is a listener sponsored low-power radio station which, for the time being, is on the internet. You either tape it when it's airing or hope that some day the DJ has a flashback.

Congrats for getting back on the (cyber) air. Someone should call Jim Pepper. He might be getting a royalty check after all...

Like I told you in '75 this radio thing will never amount to anything for you:-) Brake a leg "Old Timer"!!!

Hi Charles,
The obvious (to me anyway) question is "what time in Boston is the show?" You start at 6 therefore yer on at midnight in beantown? You're on during the first few hours of my wife's birthday this year....You'll be ringing in at a special time ( for me anyway) ! LOL
Posted by: Chuck Tatakis | March 19, 2005 10:29 PM
Is this for real Charles? I was a huge WBCN listener in the 1970's because it seemed you were free to play your own music. It made you the voice of our times! Then you moved into the1980's and introduced us into the new wave of pop music. With the Big Mattress songs of the week. Like 'Ah Leah' Donnie Iris, 'Fashion' by David Bowie, and 'Fame by John Lennon and friends. We know Corporate took over when you moved on to WZLX and played only our past hits. We can see why you were stifled by the narrow, redundant play list. Even though, we still loved YOU!
To let your music be free again? On the air waves...Yes I will listen! And contribute if that is what is required! Talk to us Charles! We still want to hear your musical interpretation .

Chuckkkk, if you need a producer, I wouldn't mind you flying me out there every Wednesday -- I'd even work for free.
;-)

Chaz,
OK I can't spell..but how many of your fans can't read. I mean This time thing!!
Struff,
Eat me I've got dibbs:-)

It's amazing, isn't it? I say the show starts at 6 AM Hawai'i time and everyone has me on til midnight in Boston. I am not sure when Boston goes on Daylight Savings Time, but until then, you are 5 hours ahead of Hawai'i. So if my show starts on Wed morning at 6AM here in Hawai'i, you all will get it at 11:00 AM on the east coast. When DST kicks in, you will get it at noon, because HI does NOT turn the clocks ahead.
Posted by: Charles | March 20, 2005 12:34 AM
Your Producer? What does that mean exactly? I'm wicked smart! I'll come. Screw them them all. I'd love to see Hawaii. It's 6 hours different. If you do a 6:am show we get you live here at 12::noon . Day light savings time we Spring forward here in the North East. So the show starts instead at at 11:00 Am. How long exactly will your new show be? Mary

Great news..can't wait!!!

So what time is that show on Zulu time? And if two radio shows leave the train station at noon Pacific, headed in opposite directions, travel for 4 nautical miles, then turn left and travel for 3 nautical miles, how far apart will they be if it's daylight savings time and one of them is on the other side of the international date line?
Posted by: choolie | March 20, 2005 6:11 AM
Definitely been hoping you'd get the itch to get back on the "air." Can't wait to listen (gotta figure out how to tape it!) - and if contributions are needed, sign me up!

Hot damn! Congratulations and have fun on your new mattress!
Posted by: elp | March 20, 2005 11:50 AM
Great news. Personally, a little less Duane and a little more of the great music the original Charles would choose, would be to my liking.
Radio can be alive!! But lets not get hung on the name 'radio.' Let's call it Broadcasting!!
Posted by: Dan | March 20, 2005 2:12 PM
YOU'RE BAAAAACK! OMG, I was so hoping this would happen! I'll even get up early to listen in. Very glad you changed your mind on this. PLEASE, SHAKE THIS SLEEPY LITTLE ISLAND UP, would ya? Maybe a 7.0 on the Richter scale, at least!

Great News Chuck!
Does Manaoradio know what they are in for?
LET IT ROCK!!!
Make certain you play "Goin Home" by the Stones if you are taking requests...
Can you play ROIO? (Recordings Of Illegal Origin...)
There's a wicked pissa 9min+ version of "Still A Fool" the old Muddy Waters song, done by the Stones, circa the Beggars Banquet era....Ping me if you need this...

Good luck, my friend. This is where you belong.

FYI: just downloaded Freecorder (at freecorder.com). You can record manaoradio with it.
Posted by: choolie | March 21, 2005 10:54 AM
Choolie or Charles,
I've just downloaded this Freecorder.com website. Now what do I do to zero in on the show and record it?
Posted by: h | March 21, 2005 12:21 PM
h: Assuming that you already had downloaded winamp and were able to play the radio station by going to manaoradio.com and clicking "listen live"... Leave your winamp player going playing the radio station. Open up freecorder, and hit the record button. Give your file a name, and keep it going until you want to stop. Then hit "stop" and view files. You can play the file you just recorded by clicking on it.

And if you Mac users have already noticed that Julie's freecorder hates you, you can always downloadAudioHijack
It works great for Mac OSX

Hey, I can't help the fact that you Macsters insist on playing with your EasyBake ovens in a Viking world.

Okay, now I need help from all of you advanced cyber-thinkers.
My computer at work is being watched by Big Brother, aka Perot Systems (yes, Ross Perot's son) and when I put Manaoradio.com into my favorites a few years back, they censored it as "entertainment". So my problem is I can't put in the URL. Is there a way I can circumvent the URL by picking it up through a secondary source?
Example. If I Google a sight and go into Cache, I can get that URL minus...say the pictures.
Any ideas?
Thanks.
Posted by: h | March 22, 2005 4:12 PM
h: Perhaps you could do it without opening a web page in Explorer. Just open Winamp, choose File, Play URL, and when the window comes up asking for a URL put in the radio station's IP address: 64.62.252.134:4040
Posted by: choolie | March 22, 2005 4:29 PM
So Choolie you are obviously the Alpha Geek here and I curtsy deeply as I say so...when I try to tune into the station it breaks up into fragments of sound and silence. In Winamp, the scrolling window at the top right where it says 1.Manao Radio live from Maui changes to something like (Buffer 60%) with choppy silence then the live feed sounds for seconds then (Buffer 20%) again with choppy silence. Any thoughts on connecting to a smooth signal?
Posted by: LadyArtist444 | March 22, 2005 7:19 PM
I guess they're trying to tell you something... Like, stop spending all the company (you "work" for)'s dollars playing on the computer. :)
If they put REAL Spyware on that thing, you would be working in your kid's cafeteria within two months.
Posted by: Mahatma | March 22, 2005 9:24 PM
Well, thanks for your advice Mahatma. Guess what? Some people can listen to music AND work at the same time? Would you believe that the human brain is so complex?

"Some people can listen to music AND work at the same time? "
h,
That is correct, you just aren't one of them. I think you will look cute wearing a hairnet in the Cafeteria...

h,
you might want to take that course in basic computer skills while your present employer will pay for it.

Thanks, everyone.
I already have a radio and tape player in my office. I listen to talk radio while I work (alone) or music. Sometimes I play CD's. The difference here would be that I would be listening to Charles' show for 4 hours once a week. If you are having some fun at my expense, fine. If you are trying to be condescendingly upright, I feel sorry for you.
Choolie, thanks for the tip- I'll try it and if it doesn't work, then I guess I'll just have to miss out.

LadyArtist- I'm not really a geek, but I AM married to one. And my Big Manly Hunk of Geek wants me to point you in the direction of the manaoradio website, the link halfway down the first page for listening problems. It takes you to a problems page which talks about changing your buffer size. You could try following their advice. My husband's other suggestion: In your Winamp player, choose options, then preferences, and under the general preferences it asks you to select your internet connection type. Instead of telling it that you have a high speed connection, he suggests you try telling it that you are connected via dial-up modem. His thinking is that Winamp would then have to increase the buffer size to maximum, because if you're on a slow connection it would have to try to get as much information into the buffers at one time as possible. I am running it that way right now and it works. But then again, it worked for me when I told it I had high speed, too.
That's all I've got. Hope it helps.

"I think you will look cute wearing a hairnet in the Cafeteria..."
Ben,
If you think I would look cute wearing that hairnet, you should see me when I take it off....
Mahatma,
I'd love to work those Cafetaria ladies hours....
no weekends, no holidays, no summers, no mornings, no afternoons...
Ah...the life of The Ladies Who Do Lunch....
