Unless I miss my guess, Robert you have never or haven’t recently spent any time in the “New South”. The “Forget Hell” attitude you allude to has gone the way of Muzzle Loading Rifles and Picking Cotton by hand. Edmund Wilson’s work takes on a whole different slant given the Social and Political evolution since it’s publication in I believe 1992, it is indeed the ‘NEW SOUTH’.
I’m assuming you are a Northeastern Liberal aka Progressive, so let me take this opportunity to congratulate you on the election of Howard Dean as DNC Chairman….
The people of the south have struggled with change and have made a lot of progress, however, there is still a lot of graft and lawlessness in government in many areas. For one, the "good old boy" network in the police depts. is gradually being dismantled and that's a positive move forward for minorities.
Voting is another issue altogether. Women (election supervisors) have been drawn into the "good old boy network" and have assisted in turning our election process into something far beyond anything we can trust or feel confident in. The disenfranchisement of minorities, students and young people, and others is unconscionable.
The far right Baptists are promoting ignorance, fear, and hate. Some things change, some don't.
I could go on ad nauseam. The answer lies with us, though. We have just under 4 years to forge strong, open, honest alliances and friendships with the people being pushed down. It's not going to be "internet convenient" or easy. It's going to take guts.

Been to the South Lately, I think not! Hell I lived in Charleston, SC in the Early 80's the Police Chief was a Black Jew!! From Atlanta, GA to Poodunk, MS. You'll find the "God Old Boy Network" is nothing but a bad memory.

I live in it and have friends and relatives in other parts. We experience it daily and everything I've said, and more, can be documented. The object here is not to disparage the south, rather it's to toss out a little data in reaction to the posts.
