Very interesting link. Yes, people talk the talk, but don't want to you-know. Classic example for me was in the mid-90s -- people were rooting for Gingrich to take on Clinton in the budget wars, but when Newt followed through and caused some national parks to be shut down and inconvenienced some peoples' vacations -- then there was hell to pay! Forget about "E pluribus unum" -- NIMBY is the national slogan!
P.S. Once Nixon got rid of the draft in '73, protests against the war in Vietnam pretty much disappeared.
