WOW..How great it is to see you are doing so well... I interviewed you in 1988 or 1989 for a paper on Morning Radio. Then you came to my College. Curry College. Well I just wanted to send you a note of thanks.... After I graduated from Curry College...I worked in promotions in New York for Z100. A year later I found my calling in Producing.. I've been Producing for about 12 years... I've produced in New York, Long Island, Scranton PA, Ocean City Maryland, Austin Texas, Philadelphia, Dallas and now Washington DC. I still love listening to air checks of the Big mattress. What a great show. Some day I'd love to go to Boston and bring great radio back to Boston. How cool is Hawaii? Thanks  Chuck... Charles, do you remember (of course you do) the time your staff set you up with the call to the dad of the "deceased" girl from college. I still laugh when I think about that and miss listening to the days when you were on BCN and made the drive to Boston more bearable.

Hey Chaz, how did I manage to miss the website portion of the program? I can't believe I didn't think of it but it was nice to see your face. So have you thought of something to do yet? brodey p.s. Amy Tierce (Rosen) told me that the Xmas Duke and the Drivers reunion in Boston was nothin but fun. She also mentioned that Swifty had a mild heart attack in early December but it apparently did not stop him from taking the stage. Hadges was in attendance I believe.

Chuck: I'm not sure what has possessed me to write to you today. Maybe it was the seminar at Home Depot on "installing plastic and duck tape on your windows" that made me remember your advice for hurricanes- masking tape, batteries, and water. I listened to you from the beginning, and always identified with your views (now is that scary or what). I was on Mishigas (sp) with my singing bassett hound, belting out a stellar rendition of "Happy Birthday". My prize consisted of a gift certificate to a clothing store that had gone out of business by the time I got there. I won an invitation to your going away party on the roof of the Colonade. Remember that sunny day? We are in scary times, and it makes people do scary things. I had the urge to write to you and just wish you well. And to let you know how much you are missed out here in Pilgrim Land.

hey man; first and foremost, i hope you and your family are well and healthy. your kids must be all grown by now with lives of their own, im sure your a proud papa as always. if you cant recall, i was that young chubby italian that was part of the big mattress crew in 86/87. those were great times. i still recall, it must have been a week or so after i started and the entire crew were heading to great woods to see aerosmith, you kind of walked around the room and dropped a ticket on my lap. to this day it still warms my heart to think of your generosity. i stumbled across the dirtywater.com site and started flipping about when i came upon your article. to think of my youth as a young rock and roller, following your radio station and all the fun that went along with it, man you had it! i wish that my musical knowledge was half of what you know. i remember my first time at your house in dover, the crew, all of us, in your pool. trust me i dont take my shirt off for just any body, but i remember your record collection most of all, it was christmas morning for me, seeing all those albums, i could have stayed their a month. i own my own business now, happy and moderatly successful, i own a condo and drive a cadillac escalade, what a big shot, huh. a far cry from living in a little apt. around the corner from the studio and walking to work in the dead of the night.... well charles just a quick e-mail to let you know that you opened up a whole new world to me and i appreciate the fact that i learned so much from a living legend in bostons rock history. be good and if the sun dont shine and there aint no melt down..... -david. p.s. i also remember how you would correct my copy for spelling and punctuation, cut it out! and let me slide this time. it was hard enough to type this with two fingers. ciao

Dear Charles, My husband has told me that you have many insights about quitting smoking. I had done so for 10 years and restarted whilst drinking fine wine. I know it stinks, kills, etc (I am a nurse, no less!) but I am hooked and hopeless. He (my husband) mentioned you talking about childhood, comfort, etc. I like your view...but I am WEAK. And by the way, we have a Mother's Day Duane show on tape....and I was in labor with our first child...alone!! in 1985. Duane was a real presence in our lives. And frankly, I always thought the question really was, "Have you ever been boned up the ass for being a f---ing wiseguy?!" You are a tremendously creative, obviously brilliant person, and I pray your compassion for my enslavement to tobacco will lead you to leave some rich advice for me and others like me. (not an option being a part of the picture somehow) I have tried hypnosis, multiple times, the patch, and many a cold turkey, but I keep breaking down again. If it took you seven years, why? Did you not know about NOT AN OPTION then? Or is it more than the will? Should I pray for a miracle? You were always real on BCN, so much classier than any act today. Help me Charles....if you would. Thanks so very much, Susan the pathetic loser P.S. I actually was an athlete, a racquetball champion at one time. (last year Maine State Women's B, this year New England Regional Doubles Women's B)

This response is for Susan from Maine: Susan, I think that if you go back to the home page on this site, and click on the link "Charles' Free Quit Smoking Tips." there is some information I think that you will find useful. The Mantra to keep in the front of your mind is that, "You cannot "engage in the debate- You HAVE no options."

P.S. Also, you are right about the quote Duane Glasscock actually used. It has been laundered over the years for family consumption purposes.

Happy to find this page. The state of radio today is atrocious. There is no creativity found, as it had existed in The Big Mattress on WBCN (and later WZLX). "Howard Stern - two women get naked in the studio, and a guy farts into the microphone. Tune in tomorrow for more of the same." Bullocks. And don't get me started on "Opey and Anthony". The Big Mattress was radio in its heyday. It was the best. Bringing Stern into Boston accomplished two things - 1) It assured that the best remaining morning radio would be on WBZ *and* 2) It really makes you appreciate what we had with Charles, the BM crew, and WBCN. Best of luck, Charles, and everyone on the Big Mattress, and God bless you....

Hey Chuck Many of us have come to respect your thoughts & opinions on political/social/controversial subjects over the years,as someone who definitely "keeps it real" without the BS. So... I have two questions for your ponderence. 1. What are your feelings on the PUSH to liberate Iraq other than the obvious (oust Saddam campaign)and what do you think will/won't get accomplished in the "world" picture? 2. What do you think of that capitalist prick Don Henley shuckin' out with the Eagles for a "farewell" tour again? Stay healthy, Duane in NH

Hi, I lived in Boston 1977-80 and listened to you every morning. Why I moved away from Boston once I was there has become more and more difficult to explain to myself or others ... but I digress. Since my all-too-brief time in The Hub, whenever conversation with friends has turned to the subject of radio and specifically the increasingly sorry state of pre-packaged, narrow-cast, non-risk radio, I mention WBCN in the late '70s. I tell them about how, when listening to WBCN, I could count on hearing the hits (not too often), a wonderful selection of music from a mind-blowing array of quality local acts ... and just whatever the hell struck the fancy of the jocks at that particular moment on that particular day. And from my perspective, you and Duane Ingalls Glasscock (how IS he, by the way?) were the linchpins of that wonderful aural experience. I have two different very specific memories of how you did what you did so well. One was a small moment you almost certainly don't remember: a morning when you segued from Glenn Miller's "In The Mood" right into Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" ... and it WORKED. Glenn Miller on a rock station ... and it WORKED, dammit. My other very fond memory is one that I'm sure no New Englander who heard it has forgotten: Duane Ingalls Glasscock's raving, take-no-prisoners show on the Saturday morning after the Three-Mile Island leak, with the theme from the movie "The Warriors" looping in the background through the entire show. I sat in my rent-controlled (back then) Brookline Village apartment that morning, transfixed and going "yeah, Yeah, YEAH!" in response to what I heard. Okay, so ... I'm writing because an opportunity arose this morning for me to reminisce in an online forum about WBCN (when I was a listener) as a standard of superlative radio. One of my forum friends (a native New Englander) provided me with the link to bigmattress.com. I can well understand you wanting to retire to Hawaii. Who wouldn't? Hey, could you use a 51-year-old houseboy? But damn, man, who the hell is doing great radio anywhere, now that you're gone? The second and third questions are not entirely rhetorical, by the way. Thanks for the best damned radio programming I've ever heard in my life. Damn, is this a fan letter? Sincerely,

Corey: Not much I can say after that. (Now that my personal ego has been stroked- and I thank you for those kind words).I can only say that the world (or certainly at least America) has swung WAY to the Right since those days. Not much I can do about that, not having a forum any longer. Best thing I can suggest is that people watch the Daily Show- still the best source of news-gathering, information, and satire -and maybe the only show left that combines humor with objective opinions (Well- don't know how "objective" they can be with their cynical outlook, but at least it's a different take then what we get from the regular "news" media. I can't believe the Right hasn't gone after them yet. That show is a very real danger to those corporations, and to the religious and politically incorrect extreme right-wing forces that are in the process of taking over America. (Geez- that sounds like some wakko sign you'd read, being held up by a "doomsday" idiot on a street corner.) Anyway, those were great days, and maybe if we're lucky, some group will come along and revive them -21st century style. Please keep tuned to my Blog page: http://bigmattress.com/weblog/

Chuck! I was wandering around the internet today and stumbled across bigmattress.com. How happy am I?!? I listened to you for years and still think back fondly on the day back in the mid-80s when you invited me to have breakfast on the Mattress. I called complaining about a Stones anti war song that you were playing what seemed like every 15 minutes the day it was released. You told me to change the station and I said "No, the other stations suck." Then you invited me to spend the morning in the studio - it was a day I'll never forget. You always were the best. I'm thrilled that there are clips on this site for me to revisit! All the best, jOhn

Hey Charles, wanted to thank you once again for picking me up as I hitch-hiked on scary Columbus Ave one cold dark night in 69..you invited me up to the BCN studio on Stuart Street the next night and I was there when you interviewed the J. Geils Band in the studio (they had just played earlier that night, I believe) and you had a guest appearance by a woman who read her children's stories on the air, all in the same show. I had a great time! [Also thanks for playing my Blue Cheer request some years later on the Mattress] Thanks again! C-Ya!

Sup Chuck?? .. Scary ha? You've been gone three years now, and still we can't get enough of you. I just celebrated my 31st birthday and when I came upon this site I realized that you were there almost my whole life. Growing up as a child my father listened to you and when I got old enough to give a sh-t I listened to you. Hell he and I took a day off of work to listen to your last show on ZLX. You most likely don't remember, I know that everyone has a story like this but, in the early nineties I worked for MASCO (the parking and bus company in town) I supervised the parking garages and open air lots from Brookline to Kenmore Square. I hung out at the station often, It started when Paul was doing his broadcasts from the steps on Friday mornings and turned into visits two or three times a week, just hanging out with Patrick and Sherman playing ball in the lobby and all around screwing off, most of the time pissin you off. They were fun time, memories I'll never forget. Thanks and thanks for all the show tickets I used to get I miss free concerts. I truly hope that retirement has agreed with you, aloha.

Chucky things aren't the same around these parts anymore. You realise that it is the fading of time and all we grew up with. I helped Patrick "Darbo" build the bar and spent almost as much time there as he did. Now I haven't seen him since his last divorce, thou I have heard of his exploits. We need Charles back on the radio, what about Sirrus or an internet station. All truth be told the old stations have gone down hill. First it was Sweeny and some guy,now it is just Sweeny. He is a good stand up comic, he is a Shadow of the best there ever was. I hope you are not suffering to much in HI.,keep going. Thanks, David S. Kiley

what memories...I was a college student in Boston in the late 1980s/early 1990's and was a faithful mattresser the entire time. As I was majoring in radio, hosting shows on my college station and leaning towards the politically progressive end, Charles was an influence on many levels. (though my only disagreement was on the sports teams we rooted for). I've never heard anyone quite like Charles before or since. My only disapointment was never being chosen to play Mishigos, despite my many letters of request. Its especially times like this in our current political climate that I miss Charles the most, seems we need him more than ever...

Hello Charles! Always been one of your biggest fans and actually have a Duane Glasscock Poster from the Boston Phoenix Circa 1978 which I have preserved and may part with for as little as $10 million. You may remember Floon (Father Flanagan) from your old shows..he and others from Chelmsford were pretty good friends with me back then. I understand you're in Maui? Say hello to my old singer from Australia, Mike Brown, at McCoy Travel if you ever need to buy a bus ticket somewhere. Me?...I'm semi retired and living in beautiful Sunset Beach, NC still playing the gitar and repairing PC's. You're the greatest Charles.."The Greaseman" had nothing on you at DC101 during his reign and Stern is still a dick. Just about anybody can have a hit radio show selling smut - your show always had cutting wit and brains behind it. Enjoy your retirement, brother!

Charles, you're my hero! You had an awesome run doing what you obviously loved, made a ton of money, and checked out while you're still young enough to enjoy the good life. Way to DO it!!! I stumbled across your website by Googling you - no offense, but it's a testament to my pathetic, stultifying corporate middle-management suburban soccer dad existence that I spend my precious free time trolling for memories on Google. Just kidding. Sort of. I spent my younger, formative years in the 'burbs of NYC, listening to the likes of Cousin Brucie on WABC-AM (where is he now? Ah, my next Google target); then in '77 I came to Boston for college and discovered - well, discovered lots of things; but among them 'BCN and the Big Mattress. You were Wicked Pissah!!! I listened all through the years, until you were gone. Thanks for many years of enjoyment, and may you enjoy the very best of health and happiness in retirement! Just stay away from that "poi" stuff... I'm convinced it's a sick joke that the natives pull on mainlanders, so that their intestines will eventually fill with concrete. Hang Loose, Bruddah!

Does anyone know how to get a tape, etc. of any of the lunchtime songs BCN used to play at high noon, the ones where they overdubbed the vocals. They were hilarious, and I'd love to get a copy of some of them. Email to brentn0524@hotmail.com Thanks! Brent Beford, NH

Charles, I just have to say thanks. After reading most of the comments posted here, I cannot add too much, I agree with much of what has been posted already. I fondly remember the many hours of enjoyable listening and laughing to the Big Mattress, and Would never miss a morning Mitsogas(sp), I even got an 'Instant Matress Request'Granted once. Good luck in your 'Busy' retirement and enjoy it. And like so many others, if you ever decide to broadcast on streaming internet, be sure to let the world know, because it is something I would not want to miss. Roger (Formerly of Cape Cod)

Charles --I'm not going to say thanks for all you've done ... it's been said by way too many people, and a lot more articuilately than I ever could. But I want to make a plea to your listeners and fans: I'm collecting reminiscences about Jim Pepper and his music, and fans of the Big Mattress's regular airing of Pepper's Witchi Tai To have many heartstrings attached to Jim. If any of your listeners/readers/fans have stories they would like to relate about Pepper and/or his music -- especially about how his music has touched them personally or spiritually, I would love to hear from anyone and everyone. Please contact me at bmsiegel@adelphia.net with anything relating to Jim Pepper. Thanks!!! Love and Peace to All!! -- Bill

HI! Charles, Hows retirement? Remember the days when Boston Radio was number one for Rock N Roll? I think we were the only city in the country that had about 5 rock stations on the dial, and a ton of local bands. You would set the tone for the day with your humor, and honesty, and just telling it like it is even if you did irk some people. Those days are gone. They recently took a pole on a local tv station, and your friend Matty had the # 1 morning show.Boy how things change. However I owe it to you and your station BCN at the time for introducing me to all music I still listen to from days gone by,and for there will never be another morning man like you who would play what he wanted said what he wanted, made us laugh, and people would say: Ya thats Charles alright. Thanks for the memories!!!!!

Charles, I listened to you for years while a student at Northeastern University (1974-1980). One of my friends from Indianapolis listens to Bob and Tom (syndicated and originating in Indy) all the time. I was telling her (Jayne) about Duane Ingalls Glasscock. Do you remember calling up Nancy Reagan and asking for an interview in promise for some watches or something of small value? Remember, Mrs. Reagan granted the interview to the Japanese media in exchange for some watches (value about $2000). Anyway, while you were talking to the White House operator, the FBI and Secret Service got on the line. They were not pleased. Do you have a transcript or tape of this show? And did you get in trouble? Messing with people (like auto racing around Fenway Park) is one thing, but messing with the First Lady is another. Good luck to you.

Just a Note the John Meloncamp fan club of Indiana,'His home state,' are having a music burning night. We are burning almost 2000 tapes and CD's belonging to Cougar this next Wednesday night in Bloomington Indiana. We do not wish to be associated with him after his prefomormance in New York, which slandered our president. There are fans in our group who agree with his point of view but believe when our fellow Americans are in Harms way we should back the President and the country 100%. Frankly these fans view Cougar as a coward waste now not the tough guy image he tries to portray.

Omigosh! Julia Childs died today, so a fellow Bostonian and I reminisced about the early days of WBGH -- and WBCN. I left Boston shortly after you went off the air in 1976, and have always thought you forsook broadcasting (!!!) (The Web is great.) Now that I've found your site, one thing I've wondered for 3 decades: Immediately after the Watergate break-in (and long before Woodward and Bernstein), you reported that this would trace to "the highest level of our government," but that you couldn't tell how you knew. Can you now? Never missed your show in the 70s--and am sorry to have missed all the years that followed. A belated THANK YOU! (It was an oasis.)

As a fairly conservative person, it's great to come to this website to get a sense of someone's opinion that I've always respected. While I've been inclined to vote for Bush in '04, it's people like Charles that really make me think twice about it. I always appreciated Charles political leanings in the past (although I didn't always agree)...and it means alot to me (and fans like me) to know we can come here, to get a sense of "where Charle's head's at" in the months leading up to the election. I'm really not certain who I'll vote for this year, but I appreciate being able to come to this website to read up on what Charles has to say on a subject. I and many of his fans (both liberal, conservative, republican and democrat) respect him enough to give him a good listen (or, in this case: a read). It sounds goofy, but every once in a while I'll hear the phrase "Well...you know what Charles would say about that...". Charles is just as relevant today (even from halfway around the planet) as he was on my radio every single morning since I was a "tot". Thanks Charles.

Hi Charles! I was just reading some of the comments people have been submitting and all of the 'BCN memories came flooding back in ... man what a rush. I was there for WBCN's sweet 16 birthday party at Spit. I had a spot next to Mark right up close @ the lighting of the candles! That was one of the best memories. There were lots of them for me. But do people remember your cable show on the local cable? I went to a couple of the shows. Hot Tin Roof I think it was .. shot in the cable studio in Norwood. Anyway its good to hear your back on and right now I'm waiting at work with the live streaming sound of Manao Radio on waiting for Chucccck. We miss you!

Charle's I hope you are stil checking your guest book. I had briefly heard your name from my god father I was too young to listen to your station. He mostly talked your affilliation with his brother Michael. Of course he was too proud to mention his input. When I was young he gave me some audio tapes. Being young I never understood the emotional value of them. Recently I was lookng through my archives of William (Billy) (wildman) Chebba. I located a letter you sent on Jan. 23, 2002. I was hoping you might have some archive tapes I might obtain. I am aware of saying "Booga Booga." in respect after scoring a touch down, or winning basket, but I would like to know how it orignated. I would greatly appreciate any information you can provide on not only the greatest influence in my life but my best friend. Thank you, Lenny Canada

Dear Charles, My mother told me that you are my real father... She also used to tell me that if I didn't stop a certain type of behaviour, I'd need glasses! Well, she was right, at least about needing the glasses. Don't worry, no need for a paternity test, just kidding around. Hmm, Kidding around? Wow, you're coming back to Boston radio Jan. 30th, 2006 on WBOS. That's fantastic! You were Boston Radio for me in the Eighties. Your radio show was the best in free music and comedy! Those were the dayz of clubbing at the Metro/Spit/Rat/Western Front and trying to make it into work in the mornings. Your show and strong coffee made it possible to work. The Commonwealth should declare a special holiday in your name or give you an award for keeping us all working! Anyway, Welcome Home. I'm telling all of my friends to tune in to WBOS.
