Charles- Your show by any name survives and thrives because like a living thing it adapts and evolves daily to keep pace with the future. It keeps me tuning in each morning just to see what on God's green earth you guys will do next! And now with an extra measure of music to boot...I think must have all died and gone to rock and roll heaven. Mary Coburn Newburyport MA

Intellegent without being preachy or pseudo-intellectual. Not condescending. Seems genuine. Most of the music is good. I used to switch between WBCN, WZLX, classical WCRB, and WBOS. BCN has lost its appeal, BOS just plays too much boring crap, such as Hootie and Whats-her-face-Paula Cole. Now I switch between the college folk stations (WBUR, CIN, and such) and WZLX.

Good for commercial radio, I think.

Charles,

I'm glad you're playing the "Dead" once again. Never could understand why you weren't playing them, but I'm not complaining! I've enjoyed listening to you over the past nearly 3 decades (Wow! Has it really been that long?), and am glad you're still going strong! Keep up the fight against the cancer sticks! As a former smoker myself, I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments!

Thanks again for the ride!

Charles,

I lhave listened to your show on both radio stations for years and have enjoyed the music and humor but something has bothered me for quite a while. When one of the local newspapers published your home address you were incensed and rightly saw it as an invasion of your privacy. You, however, have given out the home addresses of officers of corporations whose policies you don't agree with. Why do they not have the same rights that you do?

I recently clicked into your CLRH web page (Really nice job, Charles. Really! I mean that!) and scrolled thru the "We've Got Mail" ...WELL- I am dashed and abashed by the blatant hostility those listeners address towards you! Is it all in good fun or is that what your radio persona must endure? Talk about love/hate! I must say your (undeserve-ed) responses to their addled rantings are eloquent and straight to the point! Is all your mail like that? (Oh my poor love! God...I hope we all don't come across like that ! You must realize, Charles, I truly wish you only joy for the coming year.) - Mary C

I'm a member of the Grand Funk Railroad Internet Fan Club called "Roadkill". I heard from one of your listeners in your area that you plugged some GFR the other day concerning the the Grammy nominees.....after reviewing who was nominated, and for what you jokingly said " What? Grand Funk was not nominated?.....and they have that new album [Bosnia] out and everything!". Then all kidding aside you said that in your opinion "Grand Funk, pound for pound, is the best rock band ever!" Then you played "We're An American Band"! Well, you get one "ATTABOY" from us here on Roadkill for putting the word out about Grand Funk Railroad!!! I hope you're playing some songs off of "Bosnia" because "they" (the boys) sound better than ever!!!

Chuck,

You are obviously a liberal emotionalist who likes to follow the politically correct crowd. If you were to rely on facts and common sense, you would have to retract most of your mindless dribble and would have little to talk about. But those people whose mealtickets are to excite the public into an emotional storm, and thus raise the ratings of their shows, rely on pitting common sense, against mindless dribble and psyco-babble. Guns and hunting must be wrong, right? Wrong, that's why our founders made the attempt to preserve the rights of those heavy ladden with common sense by drafting the second ammendment. But I'm sure you and Mrs. Brady are doing your best to repeal that right? GET A LIFE! Get a REAL job, one that produces something positive, rather than fuel anger and hatred.

Hi Charles. I finally had a chance to visit and critique your web page: Nice-looking. User-friendly. Informative. Amusing. Candid.

Too bad about the lyrics web site, huh? Hope it's back on line soon! It's tough to refer to this matter as a 1st amendment issue when it was a foreign govt that shut them down. All we can do is keep our fingers crossed.

I totally agree with your views on vegetarianism. I've always considered the ideal (humanitarian) diet to consist of only those "foods" which fall from a tree or plant. A plant pulled up by the root or chopped down is murdered. However, if the plant isn't perennial, and winter is coming, then it'd be OK with me. But like you, I have not yet achieved my goal -- and I've been a vegetarian for 17 years!

Your smoking views are right on target! However, I would have been a bit more comfortable if local govts had waited a bit longer to act. The momentum was ours anyway, and it would have been nice to say the free market had decided things. But public health is, after all, public health, so they were justified.

Ooh, I see that my sentiments about the trial managers made the cut! I feel almost famous!

Nice job, Charles...

...I'm not gonna take it any more."

Charles, I read the emails on the "We Get Mail" section between you and that Gavone (I think that's what you called him), Tony. What planet is he from anyway? It would be great if everything stayed the same as when we were young, but as Sonny and Cher said (not exactly prophets, but...) "The beat goes on". Things change, music changes, people change. I can hear the changes in the format of the CLRH aka Big Mattress. The essence of Charles REMAINS and your talented crew (Lance, Skippy, Drill, Anne, Tank) CONTINUE TO liven up the morning. Yes -- some of the former things, I miss. (I had to live through a double full-moon January without Cosmic Muffin to tell me how bad it was gonna be . Also for years you said the color of the day. In my younger days after a full weekend of partying and mayhem, I sometimes needed someone to tell me what color to wear). However, I'll miss YOU MORE. I hope that if you DO buy a radio station it will be somewhere that I can hear it. I'm figuring Hawaii, but yes, I am a busy body. The west is calling me. We've got a new baby on the way out there. Auntie Sharlene has to go where the babies are. Remember -- we all have our masters to follow. Yours is a radio log and a marketing mission plan. I don't know how smart I am -- but I'm smart enough to know that life is harder if you don't follow some of the rules, at least until you get into a position to make some of those rules yourself.

Sharly

Hey Charles! My name is Kurt Mistler. I've been a faithful listener of your show every morning on my way to work since you've joined the WZLX crew.I think your show is great! But I've noticed that you rairly play anything by Yes during your broadcast. This is my favorite band of all time. I'd really like to hear some old Yes tunes with harmonic guitar licks by Steve Howe. Like "StarshipTrooper" or "And you and I" This really isn't a request or anything. I'd just like to hear these songs every now and then on the radio. No one ever plays them anymore.(great to play when you need to leave the air for a solid ten minutes or so.) Anyway, keep up the great work! I look forward to listening to you on Monday morning.

CHARLES RULES! but of course Patrick &Arvett are right on his heels. I wish you would play more differentsongs .it seems that in a weeks time ZLX plays a lot of the same songs.you should go real deep into the archives on a daily basis.

Charles, you have a great show with a talented group and awesome music. You have some weird people on the show but that's what makes the world go round. I listen every morning on my way to work and at work throughout the day. But my most concentrated time is listening your show. Keep up the good work!

I just wanna say how much I love your web page! This is a damn good web site in so many respects. and I am not just saying that. It has something for everyone- from your older fans, to the new listeners you are picking up, now that Eagle-93.7 has flown away. This web site is better than most radio stations web sites: You have pix, audio bits, and lots of history - You have some of your ramblings/opinions/political views/etc... it is REALLY cool! Plus it is great to look at, and easy to use. Not to speak badly about anyone else, but your website is better than WZLX's in some ways, and much better than WBCN's (again: no offense or disrespect meant to anyone involved with either of those). I have been doing web sites for several years now and have made lots of money from some VERY big clients, but I enjoy coming back to check out your site because it is fun to see the changes almost daily, and something which you people should be very proud of -- and you should be too -- I hope you plug it every chance you can!

Hey Chuck! We were very pleased to stumble on your web site. We are old listeners from your WBCN days and unfortunately even the most powerful antenna doesn't reach from Boston to Tucson. Sounds like your show is just awesome. We'll be sure to catch it when come to visit. Thanks for all the laughs all those years. Kick Duane for us when you see him.

DON'T CHANGE A FRIGGIN' THING!!! There's not another station in New England (I'm not allowed to travel as part of my parole agreement, so I can't compare 'ZLX to anything beyond that) that comes close to playing the amount of truly lost classics that you guys do. For example, CCR's "Proud Mary" is a great tune, but "Ramble Tamble" is even better in my book, and only 'ZLX would play it!

Oh yeah, I'd like to hear more from Drill - he may be the only guy on the planet more bitter than me or "The Bitter Man."

I think the anti-guns from Walmart jingle is lame. My personal view on violence in schools is that we should not blame guns. We don't blame internet for supplying the info for the kids to build bombs. Our society has become more permissive. Alot of good things happen when we "liberals" want progressive diversity. Freedom of speech, etc. Our new-age violence is one of the very negative things.

A word of support for the "Happiness is a Warm Gun" parody this morning. The same people who don't get the point are also in denial about the reasons this tragedy keeps happening over and over and over again. Anyway you do quite well defending yourself.

As a native Bostonian, and long time listener, I did a little web searching and found your sight!!! Great web site! Unfortunately, for listening purposes, I live in Portland, Oregon and can't get your show. It would be great if WZLX would broadcast via broadcast.com for all of us displaced New Englanders and Charles fans! As a Northeastern U. student in the late 70's and early 80's you gave me lots of listening pleasure and I just wanted to say thanks. Now with a family of my own, and like you, getting a little older, it's fun to look back and remember all the good radio time you provided! Every time we're back in Boston, visiting family, I tune you in! Good luck in the future, stay on the air until I can find a way to relocate back to Boston!!!

Charles, I have ben listening to you for since my days at Merrimack College in the early 70's. I was out of the area in the mid-70's and missed you when I returned and you were not here. But I am glad you have been back in Boston for the last 20 plus years. I listen just about every day, always in the car in often in the office. I like the direction WZLX is taking. I wish they played some newer stuff sometimes, as I know it will become classic some day and fit into the ZLX format. Like I said, I enjoy hearin you everyday and enjoy the rest of your crew. I hope you are aound for many years to come. Thanks for the music, the humor and the insites.

Dear Laughing Goose,

I want to know one thing: How come you never play any music from our boy (and fellow Sagittareus) from Palermo - FRANK ZAPPA ?! I thought this was "classic rock?!" No time for "Dynamo Hum," "Hot Rats," or even any "Watermellon in Easter Hay" - ??? Come on, Charles! If Frank Zappa is not "classic rock," then what the hell is. I'm tired of hearing the same old shit - and no ZAPPA. At least the same old shit WITH Zappa would be a little better. Come on, paizon?

Charles you have the best show on radio today. Don Imus can't compete and neither can Howard Sperm, I mean Stern.

The only other DJs I every liked were Murray the K and Alison Steele. What ever happened to them? Did they do too much medicinal drugs for their "head" colds and are they floating off in the nether worlds or what??

P.S. I got some pens, pencils, staples, tp, tape, paper towels, and other stuff for ya if ya need it.

Goodmorning Charles and crew. You make my morning on the way to work every weekday. Say, can you sometimes play some of those forgotten tunes from the old days such as: "Ain't Nobody's Buisiness" by "Taj Mahall". Where can I get a copy of that "live" tune? Any info? Thanx. I saw the "J GEILS BAND" the 23rd at the "Tweeter". It was grrrrreeeeaaattttttt! Solid Rock n' Roll, not for the meak. I'm not ready to stop rocking. I'm 58 and still full of life. Charles, it is getting stale. Same artists, same songs, same Dutch-co stupidity. Please play more deep cuts, and give the Who, Pink Floyd, and the Boss a day off every few weeks. Also, do "classic" and "original" pertain to all the remakes and poorly done covers of all those great Motown hits that you continually play ? Rare Earth, The Stones and Vanilla Fudge, among other groups, have really killed great souls music over the years. You want a switch ? Play the Four Tops cover of the Moody Blues "A Simple Game". I saw the Tops do it in Boston several years ago, and it was great. It was a pretty big hit in England at one time. All in all I do enjoy the show.I listen every morning between 7-7:30. Please play a cut off the new Moodies album some morning.Good health and great tunes to you and yours. !!!

I just read your overblown bio. You were actually #1 with 25-54 males when you started at 'ZLX in 1996? How long did it take for Howard to catch up with you? 1 book? Ha!! I can't wait for him to take you apart on your final day in Boston radio which is coming up very soon. Everyone knows you're going to be hanging it up later this year. I think I should write to Mel and ask him to get you a new watch as a parting gift. Your 15 minutes were up about 15 years ago.

Sounds like his brother's probably somebody in the biz whose ass got kicked by charles 'show.

That dickwad Jerry, from "RadioBuzz" is a Howard Hack! You can smell 'em from a mile away. They spit out their robot-swill at anything that looks like it won't fight back. They hide behind what they think is Stern's podium, and they throw little balls of their own yellow shit at anything out there that has a mind of its own, and beats to a drum that might be different from Stern's. Jerry is clueless if he thinks Howard Stern would ever bash Charles Laquidara. The two legends have a tremendous respect for each other, and neither has ever bashed the other- on or off the air.

Charles, You were taking about AOL this morning(10/6) and I thought I would tell you about an AOL sales ploy that you may want to investigate. A couple months ago there was a stretch of a couple weeks that I did not log on to AOL. When I did try to logon, I could not connect. I called AOL customer service and after a little time I noticed myself that a box that was checked prior was now not checked in my setup. This box simply states that a number (1) has to be dialed before my connecting number in order to connect. I told the AOL person that I never deleted that and I asked if they have remote access or access of any kind to my setup and they said "no". I was then able to login asbefore and things were fine, unitl the Aol persone told me that because of my downtime the would give me a free month subscription. I said sure don't bill me next month. The AOL person then said, I will connect you to the group that will "offer" you the free month. I said "offer",,I thought you said this was free for my troubles???. I was connected without explanation and a aggressive sales person answered the phone and proceeded to explain that to get a free month of AOL I would have to sign up for AOL long distance phone service at a so called reduced rate. I dxecline stating I just wanted the free month I was promised. The savy sales person continued to hammer me on the savings reflected by signing up with AOL. After I declined for the third time, I had to utilize my sales experience to shut this guy up. After I humbled this guy, he appologized and hung up the phone. The bottom line (other than I never got my free month)was that it appears to me that AOL saw a opportunity (two week down time)to remotely disable my account so I would call to get customer service and then be "offered" a free month but with the understanding that I would have to sign up for long distance phone service. This all sounds like an illegal scam and one that ZLX should investigate. How many other AOL ZLX listeners had similar experiences of mysterious disablement resulting in a sales pitch in the end. db

Love the show. Have listened to Charles since the early 70's. His show has been my morning drive entertainment consistently for the last 14 years. During that time I have been driving from Plymouth to Boston thru the big dig!!improvments!! Found Lance's show during Charles summer vacation very entertaining. Love Patrick where is he these days ? I only hear him on weekends.

Charles, you love the Clash, hate the Yanks, need new material. You need F--- the Yankees, done to the tune of Rock the Casbah. (don't shit on my spelling)A few verses, you can work on the rest. Steinbrenner don't like it,F--- the Yankees, f--- the Yankees, Steinbrenner bought the Rocket, to help him win it all, But all of us in Boston, know the Rocket has no balls. Steinbrenner don't like it, F--- the Yankees etc. The Yanks had Babe and Gherig, Dimag and Mantle too, but we've still got Teddy Ballgame, so F--- the dead yanks too. Get the idea. Gotta run, I listen every A.M. More moodies please. Something off the new album.

Less glam, and more Stones. This " artist du jour" is on the edge of being awful. Example, hearing Eric Clapton over and over in the morning put me right back to sleep. All around good, maybe a few less endorsements too. I haven't heard anything about The Bruins for awhile now...?

i personally think your drive time radio craziness is great!!! you keep my mind on the funnier side of life and don't take life toooo seriously , unlike the rest of the world...your stories and skits are a good start to my day and everyone in the listener audience should be tuned to you and your staff of loons...tank , what can anyone say about tank.... he is sports... where would this world be without "tank on sports"??... they'd be listening to some disco station talking about nothing ....and anne cody she's a nice voice to listen to in the morning... she does the news and doesn't go off on a tangent unlike others on the "other" radio stations..i wish i could comment on all your staff but i don't think there is enough room here....you've got a good crew charles... and i have been listening to you for quite a long time now ...and hopefully if the good lord is willing and the creek don't rise "we" as in all the listeners will be listening to you for another long time... and no i am not sucking up to you to get tickets to anything either...lol... signed a longtime listener for the next millenium,

Dear Charles:

This morning during the debate regarding the Payne Stewart jokes you said you need female listeners. You have them. I can't be the only one. I've been listening to you since I was in high shool or maybe even before that (which makes us both old). I don't know what you decided to do about the jokes, I hope you didn't tell them. At any rate, please take into consideration that not everyone who listens to you or to WZLX is an adolescent male. This of course encompasses most males between the ages of 12 and death. It would be nice to know that women are considered part of the "demographic".

Charles A heartfelt THANK YOU for your temperate response to the crew's suggestions this morning (Wednesday, Nov 10; 8:45 am or so) that you are gay and need to come out.

By replying "What difference does it make if I am?" you honored the dignity and self-worth of hundreds to thousands of your listeners.

Thank you for not reacting quickly and making the denial that is so very often, the first and only response that is heard or remembered. Thank you for providing another response to those people who have been harrassed by this type of question, and haven't had a good answer to use.

...and, finally, THANK YOU maintaining your dignity in the face of the continually pressed question. Everyone is entitled to dignity and freedom from harrassment about his/her sexual orientation, whatever that choice may be. Thank you for being a straight man and maintaining the pride of people who may not be straight.

I am a long-time fan and a lesbian listener from Worcester.

Blessings on you, Charles.

I had read a "blind" item from the "Inside Track" gals in the Herald claiming that a well-known Boston radio personality would step down at the end of calendar 1999. I hope it's not Charles! His radio shows have always been humorous without descending to sleaze; funny without having to be insulting; and entertaining without being controversial. I hope that that Charles Laquidara and his "Radio Hour" will be part of the morning lineup on WZLX for years to come!

pull up a chair...

this was way way back in the dawn of time, when CDs first came out. probably 1986 or so. possibly earlier. one of the first CDs to exist for mere mortals was a limited-edition Beatles White Album CD, numbered, and only let out to radio stations as a promotional gig to show off how cool CD technology was. this was back when a VCR averaged around $500, had one head, jumpy pause, and the tapes weighed 5 or 6 pounds.

Charles, working at BCN at the time and BCN itself being a pop/classics station (this was before ZLX, i think), decided that the best way to keep anyone from taking the aforementioned CD was to write, in permanent black marker, "DO NOT STEAL" on it.

it worked. no one stole the CD. because, you see, Chuck only understood vinyl. on a record, it's the top side that plays at a given time. Chuck was "with it" to understand that a CD only had one playable side, but he thought it, too, was the top.

you can see where this is going. no one stole the CD because he made it worthless by writing over the music side.

this was funny enough at the time, but it just became funnier over the years as we all got to know the man and appreciate the brain-wattage it would take to make a mistake like this.

I have been listening to Chuck since 1975 at a young age of 14. It's still great to hear a familiar voice in the morning. I carried my listening to my working career in Boston in 1980. I always wanted to play mishagats (sp?) but never had the nerve to write or call. The only question I have is when Chuck was at the old station, he boycotted "The Eagles" music because of the ridiculous prices from their "Hell Freezes Over" tour. Since coming to ZLX, he talks about them and plays their music as if nothing happened. Was this a promotion or Chuck's personal action?

I first touched down in attleboro MA in 1970,the guy at the design table in front of mine had a car radio from a wrecked out Chevy. The radio played through 2 car speakers hung from coat hangers. Not only was the radio an extremely unusual visual, The Big Matress was the show that came from that over- the-edge-but-tightly-crafted piece of work, they seemed a pretty good match.A lot of water has passed under a lot of mostly forgotten bridges since then, but Charles and the morning entourage has been a touchstone for creativity through out it all. Thanks for the road behind, I look forward to the road ahead. Charles has the best program in the morning. He has great guests and plays great tunes. He's lasted a long time i think because he doesn't take himself too serious. At the same time though, he's not stupid sounding. He's been on Boston radio for a long time and i hope he'll be on for many more years.

Charle's I waited long enough to put my two cent's worth in.If all of your listener's could know you as well as I do,they could write a book.Don't worry, I know you made me promise, and I alway's keep my word.I spent a whole lot of morning's on the Big Mattress, and enjoyed every moment of them, except a couple of time's you chewed my ass out. But,that was when I realized you were a true friend, and have been for over 12 year's now.I just want to thank you for all the year's of great fun,and music, but most of all for being my friend.Never forget the time I drove past the exit for the Worcester Centrum, and made you late for the concert.I won't tell any of the other storie's,but we sure had some fun time's. Thank's for letting me be a part of the Big Mattress, and thank's for being my friend. If you still have big ball's print this.I love you Chuck!

PS Thank's to Tank,Lance,Bob,Patrick, and all my other friend's at XLX,you still rule!!!!!!!!

My Charles story: You called me at 6:20AM on my birthday in 1980 - when the phone rang, as soon as I heard your voice say "hello?", I said "HI CHARLES!". You said, "how did you know it was me?" and I said "who else would call me at this time in the morning?" <smile>.... this was before you did the funny fake voices.

My now-husband was the one who wrote you the letter to arrange for the call, and his doing that made me realize that he was "the one" <aw, how sweet!>

Anyway, I'm glad I can still hear you first thing in the morning after ALL these years (although just barely, we're right on the edge of the signal area).

Oh, and I began listening to you (on the OTHER radio station) after WCAS went off the air circa 1978. LONG time...

Hi Chuck, Been listening for years. My birthday is March 15. You're familiar with that date I'm sure. I call it the birth of underground radio, and you are a big part of that in Boston. Take care of my friend, Bob Hiltz, The Sprinkler Doctor. He married my niece Sue. Keep rockin'.

Charles, Could you or the staff help me out? I have sent numerous emails to WBCN but received no response. I am looking for a recording of a song you guys played once in a while by a Boston comedian. His name was Tom (Bergeron?). It was called, "Blow me." He did a Sinatra impersonation while singing it. Pretty funny. Anyway, any help you could provide in my quest would be appreciated.

Hi Charles, I've been listening to You from the begining. Most of the time. It gets me off to a good start in the morning before I have to face the gruelling day at the office. I don't get to listen to you at work well, that's because I work for someone who dosen't like the Music. What can I say??? Too bad for her. Miss a little miss a lot. Keep on rocking Charles. Don't stop even in retirement. I'm rock til I bop my last. Then I'm planning a rocking send off when my time on earth is done. I hope there is a Rock N' Roll Heaven. I did visit the Hall of Fame 3 years. I recomend it to all true rockers. It's important cause THEY said it wouldn't last. They were wrong and the ROCK lives on.
